NME to be given away free from today
The New Musical Express after 63 years of charging for the paper has now emerged as a free title with a print run of 300,000.

Follows the likes of Time Out & The Evening Standard in going free.
Anyone still been buying it over the years?
Will you stop reading it now that it is selling out and going mainstream? And bore people you see reading it by telling them 'I was into that before it sold out'

Speaking of Mark Ellen as someone was a while back it was terrible that his magazine The Word had to close a few years back.
You'd hope there would be a place for an intelligent magazine about all sorts of culture but obviously sales dropped off too much to make it economic.
The magazine world now seems to be the big glossy fashion mags and the likes of Hello and celebrity bollocks.

I know you're dying for someone to ask you what the fuck you're going on about Hairyspotter so I'm not going to.

I remember when Record Mirror bit the dust about 20 years ago.

They were a much better music mag than NME...When I was at school, my local newsagent would save one for me every week :-)

Re: NME to be given away free from today
Make club nme into a 3000 a week attendance and give them something to write about then come back to me. I also put Russell brand on the map that night. Do your research.

They are headless fools. Of course it's free. They couldn't run a fucking marathon.

Oh And it was 10th bday of nme.com I had to swallow their shit. But it made my uncle Darren recognise me

Listen to a certain jenkinson at ipc telling me with a straight face he was dating Kellis. Full on cock. Nme bday 10th anniversary I think. Got thanked in paper. Didn't get paid. Fuck them and fuck everyone. I bid you good day

Sad day, just another rag? It's been many years since I used to read NME

Whatever happened to The Lone Groover? Anyone remember that?

Supposedly to be given away in clothes shop, music shops and universities.
They were down to selling 15,000 copies as a paid for magazine.

Read it religiously between about 1995 and 2001 but definitely something you grow out of. I'll give the freebie a go though

Used to be alright when it was a paper, then it turned into smash hits and was fucking terrible.

This move might tempt a few people to give it another try. Where do you get it then?

On a related note, this is a great read...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rock-Stars-Stole-Life-Affair/dp/1444775510/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1442589584&sr=8-1&keywords=mark+ellen

You'll probably recognise Mark Ellen from his time on Whistle Test and from Live Aid coverage, but he was also a print music journalist for many years, and his memoir covers his time inside all of the publications of that era (including NME), as well as loads of great anecdotes about the countless rock stars he met along the way.

I read it in about a day, very unusual for me.

Highly recommended.

Died when they put So Solid Crew on the cover. Never bought it since. Won't get it even if it's free.
